Neighbors United for South Elkhorn Creek
South Elkhorn Creek rises in Southern Lexington, KY, draining westward from Fayette Mall and Nicholasville Road. The waterway includes Jessamine, Fayette, and Woodford counties, eventually reaching the Kentucky River.
Neighbors United for South Elkhorn Creek is working to improve our watershed through community involvement in its waterways, wetlands, greenways, ponds, springs, karst systems, and streamside habitat.
As the Bluegrass area grows, new developments are required to provide for greenways and buffers for streams, wetlands, and floodplains. These green spaces are managed by a wide variety of entities: City Parks, City Stormwater Authorities, Neighborhood Associations, and private property owners.
Our group is working with resource management agencies and individuals to carry out the provisions articulated in state and local regulations, and published management plans. We work to involve our neighbors in helping with that management work, and in understanding the function and value of our riparian buffers, waterways and greenways.
